{"id":544,"date":"2012-09-01T14:21:44","date_gmt":"2012-09-01T22:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/?p=544"},"modified":"2015-11-24T07:32:31","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T15:32:31","slug":"deer-detente","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/deer-detente\/","title":{"rendered":"Deer Detente"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The deer in my suburban neighborhood are not numerous yet and have lots of vegetation to choose from. \u00a0This is a good thing because municipal restrictions mean that eight-foot deer fencing is not an option.<\/p>\n<p>I have worked out my own system for dealing with our most frequent visitors, Mr. Antlers and his two-stag posse. \u00a0Most mornings I go out and assess any overnight damage.\u00a0 Usually the deer munch the leaves off a few hostas, leaving only stems behind. \u00a0Mr. Antlers, or the resident groundhog, also seem to like members of the campanula family. \u00a0Recently the deer ate the top two feet of growth off a young Clematis montana.<\/p>\n<p>I treat deer damage by cutting back affected plants and spraying repellent on species that Mr. Antlers et al. seem to prefer. \u00a0This strategy appears to work\u2014for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>After years of being deer-less, I resent the deer, but there is nothing to be done.\u00a0 They are here to say and so\u2014I hope\u2014is my garden<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The deer in my suburban neighborhood are not numerous yet and have lots of vegetation to choose from. \u00a0This is a good thing because municipal restrictions mean that eight-foot deer fencing is not an option.
