{"id":524,"date":"2012-08-25T11:03:40","date_gmt":"2012-08-25T19:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/?p=524"},"modified":"2015-11-24T07:32:31","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T15:32:31","slug":"wayside-flowers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/wayside-flowers\/","title":{"rendered":"Wayside Flowers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<p>Back in August 1916, a Boston-based beverage producer, the Dwinell-Wright Company, published an illustrated brochure, \u201cCommon Wayside Flowers\u201d to promote its White House brands of coffee and tea.\u00a0 Ninety-six years later, my daughter discovered it in a box of postcards at a country antique shop.<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of product ads on the inside of the front and back pages, the three by four inch booklet is devoted to plants.\u00a0 Each of the forty-seven entries contains Latin and common names, habitat and geographic range information and assorted factual tidbits.\u00a0 The illustrations of flowers, leaves and sometimes roots are good quality and in full color.<\/p>\n<p>The entry for \u201cCommon Blue Violet\u201d is a good example:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Common Blue Violet<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2014Viola palmata.\u00a0 The best loved and the best known of the early wild flowers.\u00a0 Found in eastern United States fields and open, grassy woodlands.\u00a0 Blooms April to June.\u00a0 Mahomet preferred the Violet to all other flowers, and it was chosen by the Bonapartes as their emblem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>The little booklet, with its quaint name, is a throwback to an earlier time when companies used brochures or small cards packed with products\u2014baking soda, tea or cigarettes\u2014to instruct while reinforcing brand loyalty and repeat purchasing.\u00a0 I remember the Roger Torrey Petersen bird cards that came in boxes of Red Rose Tea in my childhood.\u00a0 My card collection is long gone, which may be why I take so much pleasure in \u201cCommon Roadside Flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_525\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 935px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back in August 1916, a Boston-based beverage producer, the Dwinell-Wright Company, published an illustrated brochure, \u201cCommon Wayside Flowers\u201d to promote its White House brands of coffee and tea.\u00a0 Ninety-six years later, my daughter discovered it in a box of postcards at a country antique shop.
