{"id":513,"date":"2012-08-22T12:05:24","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T20:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/?p=513"},"modified":"2015-11-24T07:32:31","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T15:32:31","slug":"good-news-avant-gardener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/good-news-avant-gardener\/","title":{"rendered":"Good News: The Avant Gardener"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For years I have subscribed to \u201dThe Avant Gardener,\u201d an excellent gardening newsletter. \u00a0Established in 1964 by Tom and Betty Powell, it is a concise compendium of horticultural industry articles and news, covering science, trends, new products, publications and\u2014most of all\u2014plants.<\/p>\n<p>With its distinctive green and white typeface, \u201cThe Avant Gardener\u201d has been a welcome arrival every month.\u00a0 In recent years, however, I have worried about it.\u00a0 The publication has always been delivered by \u201csnail mail\u201d and though always timely, contains no pictures or other illustrations. \u00a0This isn\u2019t a problem for me, but might be for other gardeners, especially those more oriented to electronic and visual media.<\/p>\n<p>Now there is good news.\u00a0 After a long and successful tenure as editor\/publisher, Tom Powell has retired and, as of August 2012, been succeeded by the extremely talented Derek Fell. \u00a0Fell, a horticultural industry stalwart, is the author of scores of books and even more articles, all of which have been illustrated with his beautiful photographs. \u00a0He has moved the publication\u2019s editorial offices to his Pennsylvania farm, \u201cCedaridge,\u201d and has converted \u201cThe Avant Gardener\u201d to electronic format, augmenting the publication with illustrations from his extensive photo archives. \u00a0This saves postal costs and provides Fell with a chance to make TAG even more interesting and comprehensive. \u00a0Upcoming features will include the results of plant trials conducted at Cedaridge and at his Sanibel Island, Florida property as well.<\/p>\n<p>With so many institutions struggling for survival, it is nice to see TAG launched on a new chapter.\u00a0 For nearly fifty years, TAG has provided professional and amateur gardeners with a firm foundation of useful information. \u00a0Now Fell can build on that foundation and create something meaningful to both longtime gardeners and newcomers to the field.<\/p>\n<p>For further information, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/avantgardener.info\/\">http:\/\/avantgardener.info<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years I have subscribed to \u201dThe Avant Gardener,\u201d an excellent gardening newsletter. \u00a0Established in 1964 by Tom and Betty Powell, it is a concise compendium of horticultural industry articles and news, covering science, trends, new products, publications and\u2014most of all\u2014plants.
