{"id":511,"date":"2012-08-21T07:39:28","date_gmt":"2012-08-21T15:39:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/?p=511"},"modified":"2015-11-24T07:32:31","modified_gmt":"2015-11-24T15:32:31","slug":"post-vacation-blues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenersapprentice.com\/gardeningtips\/post-vacation-blues\/","title":{"rendered":"Post Vacation Blues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The garden never stands still.<\/p>\n<p>I rediscovered the truth of that axiom when I came back from two weeks\u2019 vacation and found the garden in a disreputable state. \u00a0There should have been a warning sign hanging over the driveway emblazoned with the words, \u201cCrabgrass gone wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Early summer brought drought in our part of the Northeast, so when rain came in the first two weeks of August, the plants reacted as if the summer showers were laced with steroids. \u00a0Morning glories went wild, submerging anything in their path in an avalanche of green, heart-shaped leaves and purple blooms.\u00a0 Tall asters dominated every bed and the Rosa mutabilis must have grown an extra foot. \u00a0A previously sulky butterfly bush in the front exploded in purple blooms and the privet reached for the skies. \u00a0The new Clematis montana in the back garden climbed three quarters of the way up its trellis. \u00a0All that exuberant growth has made getting up the front walk difficult.\u00a0 I am sure the mailman feels like he needs a machete.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It will take me several days\u2019 effort and extreme power tool use to get the whole mess under control.\u00a0 In the process I expect I\u2019ll rediscover my own garden and get a better idea of where I want to plant this fall\u2019s load of daffodil and tulip bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>I will not stand still until the job is done\u2014otherwise the morning glories will imprison and immobilize me with their fast-growing tendrils. \u00a0Hell hath no fury like a rejuvenated plant in the throes of a growth spurt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The garden never stands still.
