I always aim to be thrifty; occasionally I succeed.
Back in March I filled each of the two big pots that flank our front steps with a white-flowered hellebore surrounded by purple and white violas. That serendipitous combination looked great for a full three months because spring was slow and cool. Now that the front pots have been refilled with Million Bells, the hellebores have moved to the shady front strip. The violas–sheared, repottted and fed–are filling a void in the equally shady rear garden. They may languish through the New Jersey summer like Victorian belles, but with luck they will revive in the Fall.
