Several years back, I replaced the grass and made a garden of the “hell strip” between the sidewalk and street in front of my house. Money was a bit tight, so I bought young plants in quart pots rather than the gallon or multi-gallon containers.
Now they have succeeded so well that unless I do something soon, they will be slugging it out like World Wrestling Entertainment combatants.
My formerly dainty variegated blue mist shrub (Caryopteris x clandonensis) is crowding the blue-flowered New England aster, which is also jostling the yellow ‘Knock Out’ rose. The larger plants have conspired to swamp a perfectly innocent lavender and are trying to suffocate a pretty little sedum. If I want to stop the madness, I have to start transplanting.
Early fall is a good time for such things. In only hope that I don’t get injured while separating the testy denizens of m y hell strip jungle.
